Worthington is a northern suburb that is totally encircled by Columbus, with the exception of a short border with Perry Township (Brookside Estates) on the west. In the 2020 Census, the population was 14,786 people. The Scioto Company, headed by James Kilbourne, subsequently elected to the United States House of Representatives, created the city in 1803 and named it after Thomas Worthington, who eventually became governor of Ohio.
Worthington saw a post WWII population explosion, with a population of 15,326 in 1970, up from 2,128 in 1950. Almost every year, there were annexations, new subdivisions, and new schools. Worthington's northern limit is defined by Interstate 270, which was finished in 1975. Growth had slowed at this point, while the current Worthington School District still encompasses considerable regions outside of the city limits.
